Assessment Action Items Part 3 (Dec 19, 2012)
Summary of Self-Assessment Discussion
Putting the Customer First
Q1: Does the transportation system have an array of user-friendly and accessible information sources?
· Need for more information in Braille, large print and written for lower literacy skills
· One Stop Resource: Information is still somewhat scatters: Way2Go, 211, DSS, FLIC
· Action Item: Have a discussion on how we want to define a One Stop Resource center and then develop based on that definition
· Workgroup was convened at the end of the meeting to begin to exploration of One-Stop Resource
Q2: Are travel training and consumer education programs available on an ongoing basis?
· Develop metrics to measure progress
· More focus on lower income persons
· Better communication and marketing targeting rural areas and seniors
· Encouraging the public at large to use transportation options
· There has been significant progress by Way2Go and Challenge.
· Below are summaries of Way2Go projects
Way2Go convened the Travel Training Network on June 25, 2012 to identify needs, coordinate local travel training services, share best practices, and plan projects to best meet travel training needs in Tompkins County. A survey was conducted of fourteen agencies involved in the network to identify common needs, resources and priority projects for the network. The survey asked agencies to select three priority projects that they believe will increase access to transportation through development of travel training services. Fourteen survey respondents (78%) selected a formal travel training program as a high priority project that would improve access to transportation in the county.
Way2Go has developed five instructional how-to videos for Tompkins County residents. These videos look at the basics of riding the TCAT bus, using a wheelchair on TCAT and Gadabout, ridesharing basics and the ins and outs of Ithaca Carshare. These videos will be aired on local television stations in the future as 30 second commercials and will be posted on various partner’s websites. The videos are yet another education tool to reach the community, specifically those who may live in more rural areas, new members of our community and those who may have limited literacy skills. In the future, Way2Go hopes to make more videos that highlight other transportation programs and services.
To educate the growing senior population in Tompkins County, Way2Go developed two workshops geared at older drivers and their caregivers. The first workshop, Retiring from Driving, educates seniors on the variety of programs and services available to them, and presents them with a self-evaluation tool to assess their driving skills. The second workshop, for caregivers, pairs with the CDRC (Community Dispute Resolution Center) to arm family members and caregivers with tools that will help them to lead an effective conversation with their loved ones around retiring from driving. The second part of this workshop educates them on transportation alternatives to present to their loved ones. Way2Go is also working with Lifelong and Longview to create a workshop that educates older adults about using the TCAT and brings groups of older adults on a bus trip using regular TCAT bus routes.
Q3: Is there a seamless payment system that supports user-friendly services and promotes customer choice of the most cost effective service?
· ITNE individual transportation account provides a model for how to do this
· Need to look at other ways to do this
· Need to modernize how Gadabout collects money
· Could TCAT card be used by Gadabout also?
· Carshare is working with TCAT to use card
· Explore ability to use EBT card for transportation (this would require authorization by state)
· Focus on multiple payment systems
· This requires people be devoted to systems integration
